As the speed with which we traverse the expanse of the internet has increased over time, the types of experiences that are being afforded to the computer user online have broadened as well as deepened. In the early to mid nineties, the average individual browsing the internet would see images that were substantially lower quality than the ones we see today so that file size could be kept low, and for the most part, the only audio one generally experienced on a web page was an embedded MIDI file, which sounds so comparably low quality and simplistic in relation to the quality of audio that is available today.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my computer started to experience random freezes, I just used Regtask and now it works normally again.

My computer is 5 years old and runs extremely slow now. I was a bit sceptical about using Regtask, but just decided to give it a shot in the end and it worked out fantastically for me.

Again, the reason is the same; to reduce the file size of the page, and therefore increase the speed at which the page data is downloaded and rendered on the end user's computer screen. During this time, the only type of internet connection which was available for the average consumer was dial up, also called a 56k connection; it traveled through the existing phone line infrastructure from the internet service provider to the user's home, and was limited physically by the amount of data it could transfer in a given time.

More Info Regarding File Extension Asf
As time has gone on, the bandwidth or potential throughput of data to the user has increased steadily along as different data transmission technology applications are explored and offered to users. Today many if not most internet users have what is called a broadband connection, whose name again refers to bandwidth. Broadband is typically transmitted over either fiber optic or coaxial cable, and still as in the case of DSL over telephone lines with significantly increased speed. This new found ability to stream large amounts of data from remote servers across the globe has given users the ability to interact dynamically with web applications, experience video and audio either together or separately in real time. Often times, rather than keeping the large sized multimedia file data on the same server as the lower file size web pages, various streaming media formats are implemented to streamline site design and organization. These protocols are merely vessels or containers which house and transmit media data in a certain way. Different programs, platforms, and operating systems may each have their own respective formats and methods. The most popular operating system, Microsoft Windows has a media player offering which has been aptly titled Windows Media Player, and comes bundled with recent versions of the operating system. As you can imagine, this makes it quite widely used as well. The WMP streaming format for both audio and video is labeled with the extension ASF, which in the past has stood for Active Streaming Format, Advanced Streaming Format, and currently stands for Advanced Systems Format, perhaps due to the format's expanded role in recent years.
The .asf file type usually houses either .wma or .wmv files, standing for Windows Media Audio and Video, respectively, though they can also be used to house other types of audio or video; the .asf file does not necessarily use any specific codec for its audio or video. For transmission across a network of any kind, the audio and video are broken up into tiny chunks and each chunk is assigned a globally unique identification number in hexadecimal form. It is important to understand that when working with .asf files or other streaming media files, you are not working with the actual audio or video data itself; this should be evident in the exceedingly small size of the .asf file. To better understand, visualize the .asf file as an arrow sign which points in the direction of the file that you are actually trying to view or listen to. The arrow, figuratively speaking, points to the physical location of the file, in this case a server, and on the sign is the name of the file which you are going to be accessing. It is only a way point, and not the media itself. When the media is streamed to your computer, it is not saved, and it not meant to be. The real weight of the data is viewed in real time, and then discarded to conserve available system resources. This type of file can be opened with multiple third party media players, but for maximum compatibility use Windows Media Player. These files are so small and quickly discarded that it is unlikely a user will have issues with data corruption. If the .asf file you are trying to open doesn't stream any media, it is likely that the server which holds the media is permanently or temporarily down.
